What to check before you hire a babysitter
Meet before the first evening
Once, at home, with your child in the room. Ten minutes of watching how she talks to a child tells you more than any profile.
Do a paid trial while you are home
The first session should be one where you are in the next room. Pay for it. It is fair to her and it answers most of your questions.
Write down the routine
Meals, allergies, bedtime, screen rules, which neighbour to call. A sitter cannot follow rules she was never told, and "she should have known" is not a plan.
Agree what happens when you are late
You will be, at least once. Settle the extra amount now, not at eleven at night at the door.
Ask how she gets home
For evening work this is the question families forget. If it involves a late auto alone, agree who pays for it and whether you book it.
Take one reference
One previous family, one phone call. Almost nobody does this, and it is the single most useful five minutes in the whole process.
What verified means here, and what it does not
