What japa means
Japa (जापा, also spelled jaapa) is the Hindi and Punjabi word for the confinement period after childbirth: the weeks in which a new mother is meant to rest, eat warming food, be massaged, and do as little else as possible while her body recovers. Traditionally it runs forty days, the sawa mahina, and in most families it was managed by a mother, a mother-in-law or an older aunt. Medicine draws the same line in a different place: the World Health Organization treats the six weeks after a birth as the postnatal period and builds its care guidance around it.1
A japa maid is the woman hired to do that job when the family cannot. She is not a nurse and not a nanny in the usual sense. She is a specialist in one narrow, exhausting window: the first one to three months of a baby's life, with the mother's recovery as much her responsibility as the child.
The role exists across India under different names, but japa maid is the term most families now search for, in Delhi and Gurgaon especially, and increasingly in Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Pune, where young parents live far from their own families. What a japa maid does
- Bathes, massages and dresses the newborn
- Settles the baby and takes the night, fully or in shifts
- Gives the mother her daily oil massage
- Helps with breastfeeding positions and burping
- Cooks or supervises the mother's recovery food
- Washes the baby's clothes and keeps the room clean
The night is the heart of the job. A japa maid who takes the 11 pm to 5 am stretch is why the mother recovers, and it is the single thing families should be clearest about when they agree the role. A day japa of eight to twelve hours and a 24-hour live-in japa are different jobs at different prices.
What a japa maid is not
Not a nurse
No medical training, and none should be assumed. Injections, wound care after a caesarean, jaundice monitoring and any medicine decision belong to a nurse or a doctor. Ask the hospital what the discharge summary needs and hire for that separately.
Not a nanny

Not only a massage lady

40, 60 or 90 days?
40 days
The traditional sawa mahina and the most common booking. Enough to get through the hardest recovery weeks. Choose this if family will be with you afterwards.
60 days
Carries you past the first growth spurt and the worst of the sleep disruption. Sensible for a first baby, or if you are on your own during the day.
90 days
For a caesarean recovery, twins, a premature baby, or a mother going back to work early. Agree the extension price at the start; renegotiating in week five is hard on everyone.

Other names for the same role
Depending on where you are, you may hear jaapa maid, japa bai, japa didi, monthly nurse, confinement nanny, dai, or simply baby massage maid. They describe the same post-natal role. Agencies sometimes attach different prices to different names for what is the same work; ask for the duties in writing and price those.

In the seventh month. Good japa maids are committed to families months ahead, and a birth that arrives early with nobody booked is the most common way families end up paying an agency premium in a hurry.
Time and focus. A japa maid is for the mother and the newborn, for a fixed number of weeks. A nanny is for the child, usually from a few months old, and stays for years. Most japa maids do not want a nanny role afterwards, though some will stay on if asked early.
Profiles can carry a Verified badge from an identity (KYC) check against Aadhaar or a government ID. That confirms who she is. It is not a police check, a medical qualification or a reference; meet her, speak to one previous family and, if you want one, arrange a police verification through your city's official route.
