Hiring a nanny in Mumbai

Leaving your child with someone is the hardest hire a household ever makes, and it is the one most often made on the thinnest information — a name from a neighbour, a phone call, and hope. Mumbai runs on the part-time model more than any other Indian city — one helper, several flats in the same building or lane, an hour or so in each. That is why timings matter more here than salary: the slot you want is either free in her round or it is not.

Sevetu puts the checks first. You see an ID-verified profile, you chat before you commit, and the hours, duties and salary go into a digital work agreement. Set what you need — school runs, full-day care, or a babysitter for evenings — and nannies in your part of Mumbai apply. Sevetu never takes a commission.

Setting a fair wage

What should you pay nannies in Mumbai?

What actually sets the rate

Hours, how many people live in the house, exactly which tasks are included, whether the role is live-in, and how far the nanny has to travel to reach you. Two households on the same street can pay very differently and both be fair.

Ask your own street first

An ILO and IIHS study of domestic work in Indian cities found households calibrate to the running rate in their own neighbourhood, and are reluctant to break it — which is why pay clusters tightly inside one society in Mumbai and jumps between them. Your building is a better guide than any city-wide average.

Then put it in writing

Salary, hours, weekly off, paid leave, notice period and festival bonus. Agreeing all six at the start is the single best thing you can do to make the arrangement last.

We do not publish a salary table for Mumbai, and that is deliberate. No independent source measures home-help pay reliably at city level, and a number we invented would only anchor you to a figure with nothing behind it. Work it out from the job in front of you, and agree it directly — Sevetu takes no commission either way.

Beyond identity

How to get a police verification in Mumbai

Sevetu runs an identity (KYC) check — Aadhaar or government ID. That confirms a person is who they say they are. It is not a police or criminal-background check, and we will never describe it as one. What we do and do not check →

If you want a police check as well — and for live-in roles, childcare and drivers it is worth it — you arrange it yourself, and in Mumbai there is an official route. Mumbai Police handles it through the online Domestic Servant Intimation form. The Mumbai Police form asks for the helper's photograph, an identity proof such as Aadhaar, a driving licence, PAN, voter ID or passport, a residential proof, and the employer's own name, contact number and address. Government processes change. Check the official Mumbai Police site for the current form, fee and documents before you apply. Sevetu is not affiliated with any police department.

Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Post your job with your locality — Andheri, Bandra, Powai or wherever you are — the age of your child and the hours you need. Nannies who can genuinely commute to you apply.

In practice most Mumbai families use the words interchangeably. On Sevetu what matters is the hours you post: regular daily childcare, or occasional evening cover. Both are on the platform.

Nannies can carry a Verified badge from an identity (KYC) check against Aadhaar or a government ID. It is an identity check, not a police, criminal-background or qualification check — for childcare especially, please also meet in person, ask for references and trust your own judgement.

Yes, and we would encourage it for childcare. Mumbai Police runs the online Domestic Servant Intimation form — the section above explains how. Sevetu verifies identity only and cannot do this for you.

We do not publish a figure, deliberately. Childcare pay varies with the hours, the age and number of children, whether cooking or cleaning is included, and whether the role is live-in — and it settles locally rather than city-wide. Agree it directly with her.

Most speak some combination of Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English. For a young child it is worth choosing someone who shares the language you speak at home — applicants list theirs on their profile.

Yes. Set it when you post the job, and be explicit about accommodation, food, weekly off and time boundaries — live-in roles go wrong most often over hours, not money.

Hours, days off, exactly which duties are included (childcare only, or childcare plus cooking or cleaning), leave, notice and salary. Sevetu records it digitally so both sides have the same version.
