What the work covers, and why two maid jobs never pay the same
Two families can post the same "maid job" and mean completely different work. Before you talk about money, make them tell you the scope:
- How many rooms and how many floors, and whether the balcony, terrace or stairs are included
- How many people live there, and whether that includes small children or an elderly person
- Sweeping and mopping only, or dusting and bathrooms too — and how many bathrooms
- Utensils: how many rounds a day, and whether guests' utensils are counted separately
- Clothes: machine wash, drying and folding, or hand wash, and on how many days
Scope is what decides the pay. Mopping and one round of utensils in a two-bedroom flat with two people is not the same job as a duplex with four people, three rounds of utensils and daily laundry, and it should not carry the same salary. When a family adds a task months later, that is new scope, and it is fair to reopen the salary conversation.
Several homes part-time, or one home full-time
Part-time work across three or four homes spreads your risk. If one family shifts out of the city, you still have the others, and you choose which slots you take. The cost is travel and timing: the time between homes is unpaid, the work sits in the early morning and evening, and four employers means four sets of expectations to manage.
One full-time home is one commute and one relationship. The monthly amount is usually larger, a weekly off and paid leave are easier to agree, and the work becomes predictable. The risk is concentrated — if that job ends, your whole income ends on the same day — and duties tend to grow quietly once you are in the house all day.
Neither is better than the other. Decide which risk you can carry, then say clearly in your profile which one you are looking for, so families stop calling you for the wrong thing.
How to be the one the family calls
Families read many profiles and call the few that answer their questions before they ask them. Vague profiles get skipped.
- Name your area and the areas you can actually reach, and how you travel — walking distance, bus or auto
- Give real timings. "7 to 9 in the morning and 5 to 7 in the evening, Monday to Saturday" beats "flexible"
- Say what you do and what you do not do. Turning down car washing, pet care or cooking upfront costs you nothing and saves both sides a wasted visit
- Say how many homes you already work in, so the hours you are offering are believable
- Finish the ID check. The Verified badge confirms who you are, and families filter for it
Then reply quickly. Many jobs go to whoever answers first in the chat, and your number stays private until you decide to share it. Do not claim experience you do not have — it shows in the first week and costs you the work.
What to settle before your first day
Agree all of this in chat, in plain words, before you start:
- The salary, and the date each month it is paid
- Start and finish times, and which days of the week
- Which day is your weekly off, and whether it is paid
- How many leave days in a year, and what happens on festivals
- What happens when the family travels, and what happens when you are ill
- Which extra tasks are paid extra — guests, deep cleaning, an extra round of utensils
- How much notice either side gives before ending the work

Yes. Most part-time housework happens between six and eleven in the morning, because families want the house done before they leave. Put your exact free hours in your profile and apply only to jobs inside that window. Two or three morning homes is a normal week for many part-time workers.
Yes. Say plainly that you are new, and list what you can already do — mopping, utensils, laundry. Some families would rather train someone themselves than undo another home's habits. Start with one house, work honestly for a few months, and that becomes the experience on your next application.
Karnataka notifies one. In its Zone-1 areas — the notified BBMP areas — the floor for housekeeping and cleaning work is ₹18,298.96 a month, in force 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. That is a legal floor for full-time work, not a market rate, and Karnataka notifies no hourly rate, so it cannot be divided down for part-time hours. Other states notify their own.
It is common. Before you go, agree what the trial covers, how long it lasts and whether it is paid — many families do pay for a full trial day. Use it yourself: count the rooms and the people, see the utensils and laundry load, and check the timings really work for you.
Say it early and plainly — this was not in what we agreed, so either we drop it or we fix a new salary. Point back to the work agreement you both accepted. Extra rooms, extra people or a new task is extra work, and asking to be paid for it is normal, not rude.
