What families are hiring cooks for right now
Most household cook jobs in India are built around meal slots, not office hours. The commonest ask is one meal a day — a morning slot covering breakfast and lunch, or an evening slot for dinner — for a family of two to four. After that come two-meal jobs, breakfast-and-tiffin jobs for households where everyone leaves early, and prep-only work where you cut, grind and marinate and the family finishes the cooking.
The cuisine matters as much as the hours. Families search by name for North Indian, South Indian, Bengali, Maharashtrian, Andhra and Kerala cooking, and for specific needs: Jain or no onion-garlic, low-oil and low-salt food for an elderly parent, simple food for a new mother, a diabetic diet.
Some families also want dishes washed or the kitchen wiped down. That is extra work, and it belongs in the salary you agree, not in goodwill.
What a fair salary looks like, and how it is worked out
Household cooking is priced on two things: how many meals a day, and how many people you cook for. Ask both before you quote.
In Bengaluru, resident reports dated November 2024 to April 2026 put part-time cook pay at roughly ₹3,000–₹10,000 a month, most commonly ₹4,000–₹8,000, working out to about ₹2,000–₹3,000 per person per month. Those reports come mostly from apartment and tech-corridor households, the higher-paying end of the city, so use them as a reference point, not a rule.
For full-time monthly work in notified BBMP areas, Karnataka has notified a legal minimum for cooking and kitchen work in residential houses: ₹20,548.35 a month, or ₹790.32 a day, in force 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 under Notification No. KAE 68 LWA 2022. That is a legal floor, not a market rate. Karnataka notifies no hourly rate and no pro-rating rule, so it cannot be scaled down for part-time hours.

Then be specific. "Cooking" tells a family nothing. Name the food: chapati and sabzi, sambar and rasam, Bengali fish curry, Jain food without onion and garlic, Andhra style. Say how many years you have cooked in homes and how many households you work in now. List the exact hours you are free — "7 to 9.30 in the morning, 6 to 8 in the evening" — and the areas you can reach without a long journey.
Apply only to jobs that fit those hours, and reply in chat the same day. A short reply that answers what the family actually asked beats a long one.
Settle these before your first day
Most trouble in household work starts with something nobody said out loud. Agree all of this in chat first, where there is a record:
- Timings — start and finish, and which days of the week.
- Meals — exactly which ones, and roughly how many dishes.
- How many people you are cooking for, and what happens when guests come.
- Whether dishes, kitchen cleaning or grocery shopping are part of the job.
- Salary, and the date of the month you are paid.
- Weekly off, and how many leave days in a year, including festivals.
- Notice — how much either side gives before ending the job.
- Whether you are paid when the family travels.
Then put it into the digital work agreement in the app, so both sides are reading the same terms months later. Never pay anyone to get a job, and never hand your original ID documents to a family or an agent.
